Meskel Festival & Demera Sacred Bonfire Experience 4 Days
Overview
Experience the pinnacle of Ethiopia’s cultural calendar on this grand 10-day expedition linking two of the Horn of Africa’s most celebrated autumn festivals: Meskel (The Finding of the True Cross, UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage) and Irreecha (The Oromo National Thanksgiving Celebration). Occurring when the highland rains cease and wild yellow Adey Abeba daisies blanket the green escarpments, this is Ethiopia’s season of renewal, joy, and spiritual spectacle.
Begin in Addis Ababa for Demera Eve, standing in historic Meskel Square alongside hundreds of thousands of pilgrims, patriarchs, and deacons as a towering wooden pyramid adorned with yellow daisies is blessed and ignited into a monumental sacred bonfire. The following day, witness the colorful morning Meskel liturgy and colorful processions across the capital.
The journey then unfolds through the Great Rift Valley to Bishoftu for the awe-inspiring Irreecha festival at sacred Lake Hora Arsede, where millions gather in traditional white-and-red regalia to give thanks with fresh green grass. Continue south into the Rift Valley for lake cruises, swimming at Lake Langano, and exploring the stone-terraced valleys of the south before returning to Addis Ababa.
