Danakil Depression, Erta Ale Lava Lake & Dallol 3 Days (Paused)
Overview
Venture into one of the most extreme, alien, and breathtaking landscapes on the planet: the Danakil Depression (Afar Triangle). Located at the triple junction of three diverging tectonic plates in northeastern Ethiopia, this scorched geological wonderland drops to 125 meters below sea level, holding the title of the hottest inhabited place on earth.
Trek at sunset up the gentle basalt slopes of Erta Ale (“Smoking Mountain”), one of only a handful of volcanoes in the world with a continuously active, churning molten lava lake. Peer over the crater rim in the darkness as glowing crimson lava bubbles, crusts, and bursts with primordial power, sleeping under the desert stars on the caldera lip.
Journey across the blinding white expanse of the Lake Asale salt flats to the surreal hydrothermal kaleidoscope of Dallol. Marvel at neon yellow, lime green, and electric orange sulfur chimneys, bubbling acidic brine pools, and delicate salt crystals formed by subterranean volcanic activity. Witness the ancient Afar salt miners chiseling salt blocks (amole) by hand and loading immense camel caravans that have traversed these sands since antiquity.
Trip Highlights

Expedition Logistics: Desert convoy across lava fields + nighttime volcanic ascent | Meals: Lunch, Camp Dinner
Depart Semera early in a convoy of heavy-duty 4WD Land Cruisers. Cross the rocky Afar desert and expanses of solidified basalt lava flows to the base camp at Dodom. After an early camp dinner and resting during the heat of the day, begin the 3-hour trek up the gentle slope of Erta Ale Volcano in the cool of the night. Arrive at the caldera rim to witness the mesmerizing glow and churning molten magma of the active lava lake. Sleep under the desert stars on traditional camp mattresses along the crater lip.
Overnight: Open-air volcanic caldera campsite at Erta Ale
Desert Crossing: Caldera descent to Lake Karum & salt flats | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Camp Dinner
Rise before dawn for a final sunrise view of the glowing lava lake before descending to the base camp at Dodom for breakfast. Board the 4WD vehicles and drive north into the heart of the salt desert to the Afar settlement of Hamed Ela. In the late afternoon, drive onto the glassy salt crust of Lake Karum (Lake Asale). Enjoy a sunset drink as the evening light reflects off the shallow brine, and watch endless camel caravans silhouetted against the horizon.
Overnight: Traditional Afar open-air desert camp at Hamed Ela
Geological Climax: Dallol sulfur fields + salt canyon exploration | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
Early morning drive to the surreal geothermal field of Dallol (-125m). Walk among bizarre, multi-colored mineral formations, steaming sulfur vents, and miniature geysers of bubbling brine. Explore the dramatic salt canyons and the abandoned 1920s Italian potash mining outpost. Watch Afar salt cutters hand-hew uniform salt blocks with traditional axes. Return across the desert to Semera for airport transfer and evening flight to Addis Ababa.
