Historic North & Simien Mountains Grand Circuit 8 Days (Paused)
Overview
Experience the ultimate grand circuit of Ethiopian civilization, spanning three millennia of imperial history, architectural genius, and jaw-dropping mountain scenery. Inscribing four distinct UNESCO World Heritage Sites within one seamless journey, the Historic North is the classic pilgrimage through the golden ages of the Ethiopian empire.
Begin at Bahir Dar on the shores of Lake Tana—the source of the Blue Nile—cruising by boat to ancient island monasteries adorned with vibrant 14th-century biblical frescoes, and marveling at the thundering cascades of the Blue Nile Falls (Tis Abay). Continue to Gondar, the “Camelot of Africa,” to explore the 17th-century stone palaces and fairy-tale towers of Emperor Fasilides’ royal compound (Fasil Ghebbi).
Ascend into the jagged Afro-alpine wilderness of Simien Mountains National Park, walking along sheer 1,000-meter precipices with troops of endemic Gelada baboons. Conclude in the sacred mountain sanctuary of Lalibela, descending through subterranean rock-cut tunnels to stand within eleven medieval rock-hewn monolithic churches, including the cross-shaped Bet Giyorgis.
