Lalibela Rock-Hewn Churches & Yemrehanna Kristos 3 Days (Paused)
Overview
Journey into the high mountainous heart of northern Ethiopia to experience one of humanity’s greatest architectural and spiritual achievements: Lalibela, home to eleven medieval rock-hewn monolithic churches inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978. Carved in the 12th and 13th centuries under King Gebre Mesqel Lalibela as a “New Jerusalem” after Muslim conquests halted Christian pilgrimages to the Holy Land, these sacred sanctuaries were not constructed from stone, but chiseled entirely out of solid volcanic basalt.
Divided into northern and southeastern clusters by the seasonal Jordan River trench, the churches are linked by an astonishing subterranean network of tunnels, trenches, and rock bridges. Walk down into Bet Giyorgis (Church of Saint George), the pinnacle of Lalibela masonry carved in the shape of a colossal Greek cross, and enter Bet Medhane Alem, the largest monolithic rock-hewn church on earth supported by 72 pillars.
Embark on a mountain excursion to the breathtaking cave monastery of Yemrehanna Kristos, an Axumite masterpiece of alternating stone and wood beams built inside a vast natural cavern that predates Lalibela by more than a century.
