Escape north from Addis Ababa into the dramatic highlands of north Shewa for one of the most rewarding day excursions in central Ethiopia. This journey takes you across the fertile Entoto mountain range and the rolling wheat plains of the high plateau to the sacred monastic site of Debre Libanos, founded in the 13th century by Saint Tekle Haymanot.

Debre Libanos stands as one of the most venerated centers of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, home to a magnificent modern cathedral featuring exquisite stained glass windows by celebrated Ethiopian artist Afewerk Tekle and the sacred cave where Saint Tekle Haymanot prayed for 29 years.

Just beyond the monastery, walk along the dizzying brink of the Jemma River gorge—a spectacular 1,000-meter-deep canyon that feeds into the Blue Nile basin. Cross the 16th-century stone “Portuguese Bridge” and watch large resident troops of endemic Gelada Baboons (“bleeding-heart monkeys”) grazing peacefully on the cliffs alongside soaring birds of prey including Lammergeiers and Augur Buzzards.

Trip Highlights

  • 13th-Century Debre Libanos Monastery: Tour the holy shrine, modern cathedral, sacred cave, and museum housing ancient liturgical crowns and crosses.
  • Endemic Gelada Baboons: Encounter friendly, grass-eating Gelada baboons grazing along the cliff edges just meters away.
  • 16th-Century Portuguese Bridge: Cross the historic stone masonry arch bridge spanning the tumbling Gur River waterfall.
  • Jemma River Canyon Views: Marvel at the awe-inspiring 1,000-meter drop into the Jemma gorge, an immense tributary canyon of the Blue Nile.

Monastic Dress Etiquette: Modest attire is required when entering the cathedral (shoulders and knees covered; headscarf recommended for women).

Escarpment Walking: Trails around the Portuguese Bridge can be uneven; comfortable walking shoes with good traction are advised.

Tour Plan

Drive north from Addis Ababa (2 hrs / 105 km) across the Entoto hills and fertile farmland of north Shewa. Arrive at Debre Libanos Monastery, founded in 1284. Explore the modern octagonal cathedral designed with luminous stained glass by Afewerk Tekle, visit the religious museum displaying medieval crosses, crowns, and illuminated parchment manuscripts, and hike up the shaded steps to Saint Tekle Haymanot's prayer cave and holy water spring.

Drive a short distance along the rim to the historic Portuguese Bridge, an impressive stone arch structure built in the 16th century with lime mortar during the reign of Ras Darge. Watch the Gur River tumble over the precipice into the vast canyon below. Enjoy lunch at the Ethio-German Park Hotel perched right on the edge of the canyon, enjoying sweeping views over the 1,000-meter drop of the Jemma River gorge.

Take a scenic, gentle nature walk along the cliff edge. Encounter large resident troops of endemic Gelada Baboons (Theropithecus gelada). Unlike other primates, Geladas are peaceful vegetarians that spend their days foraging for highland grasses and seeds, allowing close, respectful observation and remarkable photography. Watch for Lammergeiers (bearded vultures) riding the thermal air currents before the scenic return drive to Addis Ababa.
