Harar Walled City, Awash National Park & Great Rift Valley 5 Days
Overview
Combine the deep Islamic cultural heritage of eastern Ethiopia with premier wildlife safari exploration across the Great Rift Valley. This comprehensive 5-day overland expedition bridges two UNESCO World Heritage landmarks: the prehistoric savannah of the Lower Awash Valley and the fortified 16th-century living emirate of Harar Jugol.
Begin in Awash National Park, Ethiopia’s oldest wildlife reserve, where the Awash River plunges into a roaring basalt gorge surrounded by arid acacia woodland. Spot majestic herds of Beisa oryx, Soemmerring’s gazelles, Greater and Lesser kudus, warthogs, and colonies of sacred Hamadryas baboons, alongside more than 450 recorded bird species.
Ascend eastward into the Ahmar Mountains to the living museum of Harar Jugol. Explore centuries-old cobblestone alleys, traditional Harari cultural homes, and the French poet Arthur Rimbaud mansion, before standing face-to-face with wild spotted hyenas at the legendary evening hyena-feeding ritual.
