Journey east to one of the most mesmerizing, atmospheric, and historically singular destinations in Africa: Harar Jugol, the fortified historic city inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2006. Considered the fourth-holiest city in Islam, Harar was founded between the 7th and 11th centuries and served for centuries as an independent emirate and a crossroads of global trade routes linking the Ethiopian highlands with the Red Sea and Arabian Peninsula.

Enclosed within a 16th-century defensive stone wall (Jugol) pierced by five historic gates, Harar is a maze of 368 narrow cobblestone alleys containing 82 mosques, 102 holy shrines, and distinctive traditional Adare townhouses (Gegar) with multileveled seating platforms and walls adorned with ceremonial baskets.

Walk the evocative alleys that once enchanted 19th-century French poet Arthur Rimbaud and British explorer Sir Richard Burton. As night falls, witness the extraordinary, generations-old tradition of the “Hyena Men of Harar”, who call wild spotted hyenas from the surrounding bush and hand-feed them strips of meat using short wooden sticks held in their teeth.

Trip Highlights

  • Harar Jugol UNESCO Walled City: Explore the 16th-century fortress city, vibrant textile souks, and historic Muslim shrines.
  • The Nocturnal Hyena Feeding Ritual: Experience the world-famous encounter where wild hyenas are summoned from the darkness and hand-fed.
