Immerse yourself in Ethiopia’s most dazzling, colorful, and spiritually profound religious celebration: Timkat, the Ethiopian Orthodox celebration of Epiphany, inscribed as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2019. Commemorating the baptism of Jesus Christ in the Jordan River by John the Baptist, Timkat transforms Addis Ababa into an ocean of joy, rhythmic drum chanting, and sacred procession.

On the eve of Timkat (Ketera), thousands of white-robed faithful escort the sacred Tabots (replicas of the Ark of the Covenant) from every Orthodox church across the capital to the central encampment at Jan Meda. Priests clad in velvet and gold ceremonial vestments carry the veiled Tabots atop their heads beneath vibrant silk umbrellas, accompanied by sistrum-shaking deacons, ululating women, and traditional hornpipes.

At dawn on Timkat day, attend the solemn liturgy and water blessing by the Ethiopian Patriarch, culminating in the joyous renewal of baptism vows as holy water is showered upon the crowd. On the third day, join the lively Feast of Saint Michael procession as the Arks return triumphant to their respective home churches.
