Wenchi Crater Lake Expedition: UN Tourism Best Village & Alpine Lake
Overview
Journey west from Addis Ababa into the verdant highlands of Oromia to explore one of Ethiopia’s most dazzling natural wonders: Wenchi (Wanchi) Crater Lake. Nestled at an elevation of nearly 3,000 meters within the collapsed caldera of an extinct volcano, Wenchi’s emerald waters, geothermal hot springs, and cascading waterfalls were internationally honored by UN Tourism (formerly UNWTO) as one of the world’s “Best Tourism Villages” for outstanding community-based ecotourism.
Stand upon the rim of the immense volcanic caldera and take in sweeping views of the azure lake studded with verdant islands. Descend into the crater either on foot along shaded alpine pathways or on horseback guided by local community horse handlers.
Reach the tranquil shoreline to board traditional wooden rowboats across the crystal-clear waters to the historic Cherkos Island Monastery, founded in the 13th century. Hike along bubbling mineral streams to natural hot springs and historic water-powered grain mills, immersed in the warm hospitality of the Wenchi ecotourism cooperative.

Tour Plan
Depart Addis Ababa early heading west along the Ambo highway through rolling Oromo hills, expansive teff fields, and eucalyptus forests (3.5 hrs / 155 km). Ascend to the crater rim viewpoint at 3,000 meters elevation. Drink in breathtaking panoramic vistas of the emerald volcanic lake nestled deep within the crater, framed by forested slopes and green islands.
Begin the 4-kilometer descent into the crater—either hiking down scenic, shaded walking paths or riding gentle local mountain horses led by experienced community handlers. Reach the tranquil shoreline and board wooden rowboats for a peaceful crossing to Cherkos Island. Visit the ancient island monastery founded in the 13th century by Saint Tekle Haymanot and enjoy a scenic lakeside lunch under mature canopy trees.
Take a scenic walk along the crater valley following fresh mineral streams. See natural bubbling geothermal hot springs and visit historic wooden watermills operated by the force of cascading streams to mill grains. Ascend back up to the crater rim (riding horseback or by 4WD vehicle) and begin the relaxed evening drive back to Addis Ababa.
